  • Where does speech therapy take place?
Speech Therapy can be provided in person in Chicago as well as virtually throughout Illinois.
  • How do I know if my child needs speech therapy?
A speech and language evaluation is essential before starting therapy services to identify your child’s specific needs and develop an effective treatment plan. If you or your child’s siblings have a history of learning difficulties, speech delays, or related diagnoses, your child may especially benefit from therapy. Signs That May Indicate the Need for Speech Therapy: At 12-15 Months: Not saying their first word. Unable to communicate by pointing. Not pointing to 1-2 body parts when asked. Not imitating gestures like waving, clapping, or playing peek-a-boo. Not responding to their name. Difficulty following one-step instructions. Limited or no eye contact during interactions. At 18-24 Months: Grunts or points instead of using words. Struggles to imitate or repeat words. Rarely uses play sounds, animal sounds, or babbling. Using fewer than 10 words. Limited imitation of words and sounds. Not combining two-word phrases like “more milk” or “mama agua.” Difficulty following 1-2 step instructions. At 2-4 Years: Not forming 2-3 word phrases. Limited use of varied vocabulary, including verbs (e.g., go, caminar), pronouns (e.g., I, you, me). Saying fewer than 50 words. Speech is mostly unintelligible. Concerns about stuttering. At 4-5 Years: Difficulty forming simple sentences. Unable to express feelings or describe common activities clearly. Not using pronouns like he, she, they, his, hers. Speech is still hard to understand. Increased stuttering. Struggles to answer questions (who, what, where, why) in conversations or when listening to stories. Needs extra time to process and respond to questions. School-Aged to Adolescence: Persistent communication difficulties that impact understanding, expression, or social interactions. If you notice any of these signs in your child, a speech evaluation can provide clarity and help determine the best path forward to support their communication development.
  • How do we get speech therapy started?
Following our free initial phone consultation, we’ll determine if a speech evaluation is necessary. If so, I will conduct a comprehensive speech and language evaluation to identify any communication challenges. Based on the results, we’ll discuss tailored recommendations, including the suggested frequency, duration, and scheduling of speech therapy sessions.
  • If I have a speech evaluation done from another clinic or therapist, do you have to do another one?
No, a new evaluation is not necessary if the existing one is less than a year old. We can use that evaluation to establish new goals based on its findings, your loved one's current needs, and your concerns. However, if you’d like a clearer understanding of your loved one's current communication skills or a second opinion, we can perform a new evaluation at your request.
